Fandemic App Design

Bringing sports fans together with live updates

UI/UX case study for the Fandemic sports community app, showcasing the onboarding and home screens on mobile devices.

Project Overview

Imagine a mobile app that turns sports fandom into a vibrant community. That’s Fandemic—a concept we crafted for a client to connect fans through user profiles, game stats, personalized content, and live updates. Our task? Develop a design proposal focusing on three core screens: onboarding, sign-in, and home. We delivered this vision in both dark and light modes, aiming to wow stakeholders and establish Fandemic as the go-to app for sports enthusiasts everywhere.

UX Research

1. Research That Hits the Mark

We kicked things off by studying the competition—apps like ESPN and Bleacher Report—to spot what works and where we could shine. Through this, we uncovered some golden nuggets:

  • Fans crave instant access to live scores and love a bit of social buzz.
  • Tailoring content to their favorite teams keeps them coming back.
  • A clean, intuitive layout cuts through the frustration of cluttered designs.

2. Crafting Personas

To make the design feel personal, we built three personas based on real user insights:

A passionate LATAM man in a stadium representing Juan Torres, the 'Superfan' user persona for the Fandemic sports community app.

Juan Torres, The Superfan

(28, Software Engineer)

✅ What He Does:

Juan lives for his favorite team, watching every game, diving into player stats, and chatting about sports on forums and social media.

💭 What Drives Him:

Connecting with fellow fans, getting real-time stats and deep insights, and customizing his app around his team.

❌ What Bugs Him:

Juggling multiple platforms for stats, news, and social, plus outdated info or overly technical apps.

A friendly Caucasian woman on a sofa with a smartphone, representing Kate Smith, the 'New Fan' user persona for the Fandemic app.

Kate Smith, The New Fan

(22, University Student)

✅ What She Does:

Kate’s new to sports, thanks to a friend’s nudge, and loves quick visual learns like videos, memes, and infographics for fun.

💭 What Drives Her:

Discovering sports in a simple, enjoyable way, learning about players and teams without feeling lost, and sharing cool content online.

❌ What Bugs Her:

Tricky sports jargon and apps that feel too complex or overwhelming.

A professional Black man in a modern home office, representing Nick Evans, the 'Casual Analyst' user persona for the Fandemic app.

Nick Evans, The Casual Analyst

(35, Marketing Manager)

✅ What He Does:

Nick’s a fan but short on time, so he skims summaries, quick takes, and checks data before chatting with friends or colleagues.

💭 What Drives Him:

Grabbing key info fast, getting content tailored to his tastes, and joining polls or predictions to bond with fans.

❌ What Bugs Him:

Wading through irrelevant stuff he can’t filter and dealing with cluttered, confusing interfaces.

Bringing the Vision to Life

1. Mapping the Journey

We sketched out user flows for onboarding, signing in, and exploring the home screen, keeping it smooth for everyone. Wireframes tested a quick onboarding setup, an easy sign-in, and a lively home dashboard with live updates front and center.

Low-fidelity wireframes of the Fandemic sports app, outlining the user journey for the onboarding and home screens.

2. Key Screens

The final UI design for the Fandemic app's onboarding screen, with the headline "Discover, Engage, and Celebrate".

Onboarding

Designed for users like Juan and Nick to personalize their feed from the start, using simple language to welcome new fans like Kate.

The Fandemic app's sign-in screen, providing users with email, password, and social login options for easy access.

Engineered to be fast and frictionless, ideal for Nick, who is short on time, and for Kate, who values simplicity above all.

The main home screen of the Fandemic sports app, featuring a content feed, news highlights, and primary navigation.

Home

The central hub for everyone. The «Best Sports Community» section is built for Juan, the superfan looking to connect, while the news and «Tops of the Week» deliver the quick insights that Nick needs.

3. Design Details

A yellow star icon on a purple square, representing the primary and accent colors of the Fandemic app's brand palette.

Colors

A bold purple as the star, paired with lively yellow to energize the design.

The typographic pairing for the Fandemic app: Kalam for headings and Nunito for body text.

Fonts

Kalam for eye-catching headings, Nunito for readable body text that flows naturally.

A side-by-side comparison of the Fandemic app's UI in both light mode and dark mode.

Modes

Both dark and light modes to suit every fan’s preference and boost accessibility.
